[ # ] How Tightly Packed Is Your Suitcase?
November 10th, 2007 under Miscellaneous

Some people’s lives are like a suitcase—
Neatly packed
With private articles
Carefully stashed.

I’m not saying that is wrong—
As long as it isn’t
Packed too tightly
Or a person doesn’t lose the key.

—Peggi Lisenbee

[One of my long-time friends, Ruthie, shared this poem with me in 1984. It spoke to me then, and it speaks to me now.]

If I had the freedom and safety to unload my suitcase, to get rid of some dirty laundry, I wonder what would open up for me?? Sometimes the articles are so small or have been there for SO long that they hardly even exist. Although I know that if I DID unpack, I’d find them, moldy and smelly shoved back in a corner in a dirty plastic baggie. Underneath a shoe, probably. If I could take everything out, look at them, make a choice on whether or not they serve me, and then SCRUB my suitcase clean, I wonder what would open up for me then?? A sense of clarity, I know THAT much. I’d probably feel alive in a whole new way and clean; rejuvenated because there’s no more crap spreading around and infecting other things that may be vulnerable to it’s power.

What an amazing visual this is for me. Thanks, Paul
